What is CVV / CVC?
How does CVV / CVC work?
The role of CVV and CVC in fraud prevention
- Cardless fraud: occurs when a cardholder makes a transaction without showing the card to the merchant for verification, such as making an order over the internet. The payment system will ask for confirmation of a CVV or CVC code to prove that the person actually holds the card.
- Card Cloning: When magnetic stripe data is cloned to a new card. The scammer will create a card with the same information. But because the magnetic stripe doesn't store the CVV or CVC, counterfeit cards lack the correct verification code. As a result, the card may be accepted at a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, but not for transactions that require CVV or CVC verification.
